Strava Encourages Users To Log Their Bike Commute Miles On Its Bike To Work Day

SAN FRANCISCO (BRAIN) — Strava is encouraging bike commuters to log their miles on the social app if they ride to work on May 10, which the company is promoting as its Global Bike to Work Day Challenge. They are also asking Strava users to share their bike commute data on other social media with the hashtag#CommutesCount.

Last year Strava athletes uploaded an average of 5.3 activities every second. In addition to its website and apps that track and share activities, the company's Strava Metro product is offered to urban planners and transportation departments. Strava Metro anonymizes and aggregates the millions of human-powered commutes uploaded to Strava every week, allowing planners to improve city infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.

"In almost every city, Strava has recorded more commuting and cycling transit data than the local government. Billions of data points have given us a unique perspective on how cyclists and runners move through urban areas," said Gareth Nettleton, Strava's VP of marketing. "While Strava continues to be a global community for millions of cyclists, runners and athletes, Strava Metro was a natural next step in our commitment to the cycling and running community. By leveraging the global community's activities, we can promote positive changes in their backyards and improve cycling, running, walking, and living in their cities."

More than 70 organizations and government agencies are already using Strava Metro data, including GoBike in Glasgow, Queensland Australia, University College London, Oregon Department of Transportation, Austin B-Cycle in Texas and Vermont Transportation.

To participate in Global Bike to Work Day, upload rides to Strava, tag them as a commute and use the #CommutesCount to share activity on other social channels
