Online retailer donates to trail efforts

PORTLAND, OR (BRAIN) — Online bike retailer Universal Cycles has donated $15,000 to the Northwest Trail Alliance for trail building in the Portland area.

Northwest Trail Alliance is a nonprofit mountain bike advocacy and trail stewardship organization and a chapter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

In the fall of 2012, NWTA was awarded a $55,248 grant through Oregon's Recreational Trails Program for the purchase of equipment to be used for building trails within the Portland metro area and region. As part of the grant requirements, NWTA has to provide a 20 percent match to receive the money. The donation from Universal covers that 20 percent match.

"This donation will allow NWTA to purchase the proper equipment to build sustainable trails in the area's challenging and environmentally sensitive terrain," said Victor Sandrin, a retail store manager of Universal Cycles. "This will also help the NWTA maintain a growing inventory of trails in the greater Portland area, including Stub Stewart State park, Cascade Locks Easy Climb trail system and the Sandy Ridge trail system."

Universal Cycles has been in business since 1997.
